Milwaukee 46 Inch High-Capacity Steel Storage Chest and Cabinet Review

In this article, we’ll be looking at the new Milwaukee 46 inch high-capacity steel storage chest and cabinet, model number 48-22-8546. Its MSRP is $998 but is currently on a price reduction at Home Depot, selling for $798. This storage chest is a fantastic buy at just $100 more than the older model.

When purchased, this unit comes in two large packages and weighs around 525 pounds when fully assembled. The bottom cabinet box is labeled at 339 pounds, making it quite heavy but still manageable with two people.

Assembly and Unpacking

Upon unpacking, you’ll find the boxes filled with styrofoam and cardboard, which makes up a significant amount of the packaging weight. To assemble the unit, first open the drawers while the unit is upright and remove all hardware and casters. Install the casters on the bottom end of the cabinet, and grease them if desired.

Take note of the handle’s location and install it on the desired end before installing the bumpers. The included Milwaukee bottle opener can be installed on either end, but we chose to install it on the handle’s side. The assembly is simple, requiring only screws to put everything together.

Features

All of the drawers in this unit are equipped with a soft-close slide feature, allowing smooth and easy opening and closing. The small drawers are rated at 100 pounds, while the two lower drawers with double slides are rated at 200 pounds apiece.

Inside the upper chest and outside the lower chest, you’ll find power strips with six outlets each, including a space for a power adapter. Additionally, there are two USB ports on each strip. The chest also includes a towel rack, bottle opener, folding tray, and heavier handle than the previous model. These can all be mounted on either end of the unit, along with two utility hooks and a tool storage tray.

High-Capacity Design

The Milwaukee 46 inch high-capacity storage chest is designed with 22-inch depth, allowing for more storage options. The drawers are about 19 and three-quarter inches deep, providing space for hand tools and longer items like wrenches and torque wrenches.

Milwaukee optimized this unit for hand tools storage, making it ideal for those working on automobiles or needing additional space for hand tools in the garage. The extra depth allows for more working space and added stability.

Comparing to Milwaukee’s 46 Inch Main Version

When compared to the 46-inch main version, the high-capacity model features longer, skinnier drawers for tools like wrenches, longer hand tools, and computers. The two full-length drawers offer even more space than the original version. However, the high-capacity unit does lose some of the deeper drawers found on the 46-inch main version.

For the $100-$200 price difference, we recommend choosing the deeper high-capacity chest for the increased storage space and added features. Alternatively, you can consider the 56-inch Husky toolbox, which has smaller drawers and slightly less quality but more room overall.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Milwaukee 46 inch high-capacity steel storage chest and cabinet are an excellent investment for those needing additional space for hand tools and other items in their garage or workshop. The added depth, features, and durable construction make it worth the slight price increase over the 46-inch main version.

If you’re in the market for a new toolbox, we highly recommend checking out the Milwaukee 46 inch high-capacity steel storage chest and cabinet at Home Depot or through the links provided in this article.
