How to Select an On-board Battery Charger

By | January 31, 2023

Consistent, reliable power is the lifeblood
of all of the electrical components in your boat needed from everything from starting
your big motor to running your essential accessories like trolling motors and fish finders to taking
care of the basics like lights and pumps. There's no better way to guarantee the steady
supply of battery power that lasts for an entire trip and more than a Minn Kota on-board
battery charger. Picking the best on-board charger for your
boat is a matter of answering a couple of simple questions.

First, how many banks do you need? In general terms, you'll need one bank for
each of your trolling motor batteries. Most anglers will also include a bank for
their starting battery. On my Lund Pro V, I have a 36-volt Ulterra
trolling motor – that's three batteries. I also have my charger connected to my Verodo's
starting battery, so that's a total of 4 batteries and 4 banks that I need for my charger. The second question is, how fast do you want
to be able to re-charge your batteries? Your battery recharge rate depends on the
power output from each charger bank. The more amps per bank, the faster the recharge. My charger is rated for 15amps per bank which
ensures even a short recharge period can top off all of my boat's batteries. I run the Minn Kota 460PC Precision charger,
which is a great choice for anyone that needs to quickly recharge 4 batteries in their boat. As an added benefit, with the Precision charger,
I can optimize my systems recharge rate by selecting the specific type of battery connected
to each bank of the charger.

When it's time to add an on-board charger
to your boat, depend on Minn Kota to deliver the consistent and reliable battery power
you need to enjoy a great day on the water..
